Montreal Hosts Quilt Twice this Spring

Esther Bryan

The Quilt welcomed spring in Montreal this year with not one, but two exhibitions. The project travelled directly from Vancouver’s 2010 Cultural Olympiad to the beautiful exhibit hall at Maison de la culture Frontenac in the heart of Montreal. People came from all corners of Quebec for this long-awaited show which went from late April to early June. It was wonderful to reconnect with so many blockmakers, some of whom were seeing the completed tapestry for the very first time.

This was followed by an intense 5-day event at the Palais des Congrès. There the Quilt was the special feature for the 100th Anniversary Convention of Rotary International which hosted 20,000 delegates from around the world.

At both events it was a joy to listen to the symphony of languages as excited visitors switched easily from French to English,to Swahili,Spanish, Aramaic and many other languages. Stories were exchanged and books eagerly snapped up to take home and share. Teams of volunteers intrepidly staffed both events enlivening the Quilt experience for all. We heartily thank them for their dedication.
