Knitted Country - Un pays tissé serré IT'S A CULTURAL MOSAIC IN THE TRUEST SENSE. Invitation: The Quilt of Belonging is a nine-foot high, 120-foot-long quilt with a block for everyone who calls Canada home - including over 70 First Nations and Inuit groups and immigrants from every single country in the world. Invitation was fabric artist Esther Bryan's dream, but thousands of volunteer needle-workers and researchers from across the country came together to make it a reality. Bryan invited members of each community in Canada to produce a hand-made block for the quilt to represent their unique culture and textile traditions. There are blocks made of silk, sealskin, and banana-cloth lace. Some are embroidered, some are tie-dyed, some are knitted; some are embellished with beads, some with butterfly wings. Invitation is currently on a four-year cross-Canada tour, with ground travel sponsored by VIA Rail. Sur 36 mètres de long et plus de 3 mètres de haut, Invitation: la courtepointe de l'appartenance illustre sur ses 263 carrés toutes les communauté ethniques du Canada, soit plus de 70 peuples des Premières Nations ou inuits et des immigrants venus du monde entier. C'est Esther Bryan, une artiste du textile, qui en a eu l'idée, mais son rêve ne s'est concrétisé que grâce aux recherches et travaux d'aiguille de milliers de bénévoles partout au pays. Esther Bryan a invité chaque communauté à produire un carré représentatif de sa culture et de ses traditions artisanales. Le gigantesque ouvrage alterne ainsi soie, peu de phoque, fibre de l'abaca (une banane non comestible), etc. Certains carrés sont brodés, d'autres teints au nœud, tricotés, ornés de perles ou d'ailes de papillons. Invitation a commencé un tour du Canada qui durera quatre ans. VIA Rail en assure gratuitement le transport terrestre.
