Governor General a Fan of Quilt of Belonging
Artist receives compliments from Michaëlle Jean
By Standard Freeholder, Cornwall, Ontario April 21,2009

Ester Bryan, got mail this week. But it wasn't your average mail for the Quilt of Belonging artist and director: It was a package from the Her Excellency the Rt. Hon. Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada. Enclosed in the package were compliments from Her Excellency and a lovely selection of photographs taken in Quebec City on the occasion of her viewing the Quilt.

The Governor General was captivated with the project. She extended her visit to study the individual blocks of the 120-ft textile mosaic, to hear the stories of the block makers, and to learn how the mammoth quilt was completed.

Jean commented that the vision and ideals of the Quilt of Belonging truly reflect her own vision and hopes for Canada. Admiring the beautiful tapestry, she explained she sees the Quilt as an ambassador for our country and to the world, carrying the message, "A place for all in the human tapestry." She also wrote: "This extraordinary mosaic marvelously represents the harmony and compassion that weaves together the fabric of our Canadian diversity." She was presented with a copy of the accompanying book, and also signed the signatory book which travels with the project.

The Quilt of Belonging has been exhibited in 20 locations coast-to-coast, and has been viewed by more than one million people. It continues to draw enthusiastic crowds wherever it is exhibited.

A special exhibit of the Quilt of Belonging marking the 10th anniversary of its commencement will be held at the Cornwall Civic Complex, May 10 - 18.
